WVU Cancer Institute Named to Newsweek’s “America’s Best Cancer Hospitals”
The WVU Cancer Institute at WVU Hospitals has been named to Newsweek’s 2023 list of “America’s Best Cancer Hospitals.” It is the only facility in West Virginia to be included on the list.
“Through a culture of service, respect, inclusivity, and accountability, we are committed to lead the way to better health and wellness with cancer prevention, treatment, and research. That’s our mission; it’s at the core of everything we do,” Hannah Hazard-Jenkins, M.D., director of the WVU Cancer Institute, said. “This national recognition is confirmation that we are fulfilling our mission. I’m grateful for every team member who helped make this possible.”
The America’s Best Cancer Hospitals ranking was created to provide patients and family members with a comprehensive resource for informed decision making. The underlying data analysis is based on three data sources:
- Nationwide Online Survey: Healthcare professionals and hospital managers with knowledge about oncology (e.g., oncologists, hematologists, and oncology nurses) were asked to recommend leading cancer hospitals in the U.S.
- Hospital Quality Metric: Hospital quality metrics with a focus on indicators relevant to oncology care were considered.
- Results from Patient Surveys: Publicly available data from hospital patient surveys were used to analyze patient experience.
The WVU Cancer Institute is a regional network of care centers offering access to highly advanced experts and technologies close to home, allowing for better outcomes.
Hospitals Host Picnic for Cancer Survivors
WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital and WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital hosted the 25th Cancer Survivors Picnic in recognition of those who have survived and to offer support to those recently diagnosed.
Cancer patients and survivors attending the event, which took place Sunday (June 25) at Wheeling Park, enjoyed fellowship, food, fun, and prizes, while being honored for their strength and courage. Tina Bhatnagar, MD, director of Hematology Medical Oncology at the WVU Cancer Institute at Wheeling Hospital, emceed the event and enjoyed interacting with attendees.
Members of the hospitals’ Marketing, Medical and Radiation Oncology, Dietary, Guest Services, Pastoral Care, and Maintenance teams, as well as the Braleys (Michele, Bill, and Kody) and Maggie Pyles helped make it a memorable event for everyone in attendance.

Team Wins First Place at Southeastern Colorectal Cancer Consortium Conference
Staff members from the West Virginia to Program to Increase Colorectal Screening (WV PICCS) and Milan Puskar Healthright (MPHR) were awarded first place for a poster presented at the Southeastern Colorectal Cancer Consortium Conference in Norfolk, Virginia in June of 2023. Catherine Whitworth (WV PICCS) and Angela Lantz (MPHR) presented Implementation of Multifaceted Evidence-Based Interventions Increases FIT Test Return Rate at a WV Safety Net Clinic Serving Underrepresented Groups: A Case Study. (Whitworth, et.al., 2023). The poster detailed how a charitable, free, safety-net clinic in Morgantown, WV carried out multiple evidence-based interventions, increasing patient completion of colorectal cancer screening tests.
WV PICCS focuses on increasing colorectal cancer screening rates among people ages 45-75 in partnership with primary care clinics across the state of West Virginia. WV PICCS is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention under the cooperative agreement NU58DP006768 awarded to West Virginia University.
