'State of Minds' fundraising campaign nears $850 million
The University’s private fundraising campaign "A State of Minds" is nearing the $850 million mark with more than two-and-a-half years to go to raise $1 billion. The Foundation announced Tuesday (April 21) that alumni and friends of the University have contributed $846 million through March 31, or nearly 85 percent of the $1 billion goal. That represents an increase of $27 million during the past quarter.

Dr. Mason earned his medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh. He completed a residency in general pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and a plastic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He also completed a craniofacial surgery fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children at the University of Toronto. |

Dr. Pugacheva shares progress on brain cancer research project
Elena Pugacheva, PhD, in the WVU Department of Biochemistry, is sharing her initial findings on The Role of Primary Cilia in Carcinogenesis, a project funded this past September by a $25,000 “Let the Journey Begin” pilot grant. Erin (Poppy) Polak created the Let the Journey Begin Fund at the Cancer Center in 2011 after learning that her aunt, Erin Dunmire was diagnosed with brain cancer. In just one year, Polak, her family and friends raised enough to endow the fund to benefit brain cancer research and provide comfort care for adult brain cancer patients at WVU’s Cancer Center.

MBRCC scientists from Dr. Martinez’s lab inspire middle school students in Keyser

Post doctoral fellow Karen Hayes, and graduate students Jamie Barr and Tayvia Brownmiller from Dr. Ivan Martinez’s lab travelled to Keyser, West Virginia this past Saturday to teach middle school girls about genetics. The three were participating in Expanding Your Horizons, an event sponsored by the West Virginia Chapter of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) aimed at inciting the interest of young, female students in science and math-related fields.

Biology professor's work on specialized cell pathways receives $1.44 million federal grant
A West Virginia University researcher is examining how and what cells communicate to each other in order to better understand cancer diagnosis and treatment as well as the diagnosis of birth defects, like certain heart conditions. Shuo Wei, assistant professor of biology and biochemistry, has been awarded a $1.44 million grant from the National Institute of General Medical Science.

Lyons announces 2015 women's soccer schedule
Director of Athletics Shane Lyons has announced the 2015 women’s soccer schedule, highlighted by 10 matches against 2014 NCAA Tournament opponents. The Mountaineers will compete at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium 10 times, including a showdown with Penn State, a 2014 NCAA Tournament quarterfinalist, on Friday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m.
The WVU women’s soccer team is a faithful supporter of the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center.

Accelerate Clinical Trials Grant
Sponsor: Free to Breathe
Upcoming Deadline: Application: July 17, 2015
Free to Breathe's goal is to fund pilot research projects that will investigate novel strategies to improve accrual of lung cancer patients to therapeutic cancer clinical trials by at least 50% within a defined healthcare facility, system or community. Project aims must have specific strategies focused on increasing accrual to lung cancer trials. Proposals must have a clear vision about how the pilot project, if successful, can be an expanded to other institutions for validation of the intervention or strategy. The intent of Free to Breathe is to fund projects that will be reproducible and implementable to a wider community, including other cancers.
