WVU Cancer Institute partners with Mon General Hospital on Radiation Therapy Unit

Cancer patients from the region will soon be able to have better access to care in Morgantown now that construction is underway on a new radiation therapy unit at Mon General Hospital's Zelda Stein Weiss Cancer Center. Mon Health System and WVU Medicine officials gathered Dec. 8 for a groundbreaking ceremony at Mon General Hospital. Radiation therapy at Mon General is a partnership between the two Morgantown-based healthcare institutions. Mon Health System is covering the cost of constructing and equipping the new facility, while radiation oncology staff and medical direction will be supplied by the WVU Cancer Institute in collaboration with Mon General oncologists.

Welcome to Aaron Provenzano, DO

Aaron P. Provenzano, DO, an assistant professor of medicine at WVU, specializes in hematology and medical oncology.  Dr. Provenzano sees patients with benign hematological disorders as well as malignancies of the head and neck, brain, and lung. He is a 2008 graduate of Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed an internal medicine residency at WVU in 2011, and a fellowship in hematology/oncology at WVU in 2014. He is board certified in internal medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine and board eligible in hematology and medical oncology. He previously worked at Wheeling Hospital.


 

Cancer clinic staff spread holiday cheer through food drive

The MBRCC clinic is hoping to brighten the holidays for families in Monongalia County.  Clinic staff collected 2 large boxes of non-perishable food items for the 34th Annual Toy and Food Drive of Mon County, as part of the United Way Campaign.  Dave Staten and Patricia Policicchio were co-coordinators of the drive.


Recognition Awards Nomination deadline approaching

You can now submit nominations for MBRCC Employee Recognition Awards until January 30. The MBRCC Employee Recognition Awards Committee is now accepting nominations for its annual MBRCC Employee Recognition Awards Program. If you would like to nominate and recognize excellence amongst our faculty, members, staff, employees and Cancer Service Line staff members who devote their professional lives to cancer prevention, care or research in any and all capacities, please download the nomination form on our MBRCC website or complete the hard copy form and send to Donna Tamasco, Room 1805, P.O. Box 9300, or by email to dtamasco@hsc.wvu.edu. Each section of the nomination form must be completed, including an explanation of how the nominee demonstrates "excellence" in the particular guiding principle.

Discounted men's basketball tickets available for WVU Medicine employees

The WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is offering $20 tickets for all home Big 12 men’s basketball games to WVU Medicine employees.  WVU Men’s Basketball Coach Bob Huggins is a major supporter of basic and clinical research at the WVU Cancer Institute.

With EBS retiring, OSP will offer more training on WVU+kc

After months of successful use, Information Technology Services and the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) are ready for a wider rollout of KC Blue Sheet to the WVU research community. Online and in-person training with this new module of WVU+kc will be offered before the eventual retirement of the Electronic Blue Sheet (EBS) on Jan. 15, 2016. Research community members are encouraged to sign up for an in-person training session before Jan. 15.

Breast Cancer Grants: Breast Cancer Research (Avon Breast Cancer Crusade) Avon Foundation for Women

The Foundation continues its search for new preventive strategies to address the growing number of breast cancer cases around the globe and develop new treatments for those living with metastatic breast cancer today. The 2016 program seeks proposals in these areas to advance understanding of causes of breast cancer, prevention and developing treatments for metastatic breast cancer. Research questions the Foundation hopes to answer to further the development of breast cancer prevention strategies include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Understanding the potential causes of breast cancer and research to develop new preventative strategies
