The MBRCC held a ceremony in the Cancer Center Atrium last Friday to announce the winners of the 2014 Awards of Excellence.  The awards go to faculty members and employees of the MBRCC and the WVU Healthcare Cancer Service Line who are selected by their peers for distinct recognition of exceptional performance in one of several categories including:

Hannah Hazard, MD.  

Congratulations to Hannah Hazard, MD, who was recently inducted into the WVU School of Medicine's Gold Humanism Honor Society.  Inductees include students, residents and faculty who have distinguished themselves as having humanistic qualities of caring and compassion.  Dr. Hazard is surgeon-in-chief and director of clinical services of WVU's Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center.  She is also chief of the division of surgical oncology in the
WVU School of Medicine Department of Surgery.

Congratulations to the WVU Department of Radiation Oncology

Congratulations to Geraldine Jacobson, MD, chair of the WVU Department of Radiation Oncology, and the radiation oncology team for being granted accreditation by the American College of Radiology (ACR) for a period of three years.  Dr. Jacobson says ACR accreditation is a major milestone for the new department, and represents the sustained efforts of the entire team to create a high quality practice.


Congratulations to Jing Jie Yu, MD, for having her book chapter entitled NER pathway and wild-type p53 in platinum-drug resistance and inhibition of chemoresistance with PCK3145, a PSP94 peptide derivative accepted for publication by iConcept Press Limited of Australia in the book Understand Cancer - Research and Treatment.  Dr. Yu's book chapter is dedicated to Dr. Eddie Reed, director and the Laurence and Jean DeLynn Chair of Oncology at the MBRCC from 2001 to 2005. 


Volunteers needed for Touch-A-Truck fundraiser to benefit MBRCC

Organizers of the Morgantown Touch-A-Truck fundraiser to benefit the WVU Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center are seeking volunteers to help orchestrate the event at the WVU Coliseum from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 27. 

Volunteers are needed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.   WVU students interested in volunteering as a service learning opportunity may visit the iserve.wvu.edu website.  Volunteers may also call Sheila Powell at 304-276-1655 for more details.  Touch-A-Truck offers children of all ages a chance to sit in and explore the WVU HealthNet helicopter, a Red Cross truck, buses, semis and many other types of vehicles.   All proceeds will be donated to the Elroy C. Henry Endowment Fund for cancer research at WVU’s Cancer Center.

NIH Maximizing Investigators' Research Award (MIRA)

This award targets investigators who are beginning their independent research careers.  Applications will be accepted from NIH defined Early Stage Investigators and NIH defined New Investigators who are at the assistant professor rank or hold the equivalent entry level independent investigator position defined by their institution.  Postdoctoral fellows, including those on K99 awards, who have not established an independent laboratory are not eligible to apply.  Individuals who have transitioned from the K99 phase to the R00 phase of a NIH Pathway to Independence Award are eligible to apply for a MIRA.  PDs/PIs of Mentored Career Development (K) awards are eligible to apply for a MIRA award.  Only single PD/PI applications are allowed.  The proposals are due on September 9, 2016. A Letter of Intent is needed.

New external proposal submission deadline policy announced

The Research Office has established a new deadline for the submission of proposals through the Office of Sponsored Programs. Effective July 15, all proposals to be reviewed and approved through OSP should be approved by deans or the senior associate vice president for research (HSC proposals) and available for review by OSP five business days prior to sponsor- established deadlines.
