MBRCC spotlights individual winners of the 2014 Awards of Excellence
Beginning this week, MBRCC E-news will shine the spotlight on each faculty and employee of the Cancer Center and the WVU Healthcare Cancer Service Line who won an Award of Excellence in a particular category during the 2014 Awards of Excellence reception at the Cancer Center. The awardees were nominated by their peers for distinct recognition of exceptional performance in one of several categories including:
- Quality
- Innovation
- Teamwork
- Accountability
- Service
Those categories represent the guiding principles of the MBRCC.

The Cancer Center began the MBRCC Member and Employee Recognition Awards Program to recognize faculty, physicians, nurses, healthcare staff and other staff and professionals of the Cancer Center and the WVU Healthcare Cancer Service Line in 2012.
The intent of the program is for colleagues to nominate and recognize excellence amongst WVU faculty and employees, who devote their professional lives to cancer care or cancer research in any and all capacities and roles.
Exciting news from the MBRCC Sara Crile Allen & James Frederick Allen Comprehensive Lung Cancer Program
Congratulations to Patrick Ma, MD, co-leader of the Allen Lung Cancer Program, was a speaker at the World NSCLC Summit in Boston Precision Medicine in NSCLC this week. The title of his presentation was MET Targeted Therapy in NSCLC. For more information on the World NSCLC Summit
The Allen Lung Cancer Program will have a major presence at the 16th World Conference on Lung Cancer in Denver, CO, September 6 – 9, 2015. Several abstracts submitted by the program have been accepted for presentation.

University announces biomedical engineering grant awardees
The first internally funded awards to support biomedical engineering research at the University have been announced. The winners, which include faculty from the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources and the Health Sciences Center, are being funded through the Byars-Tarnay Endowment in the Foundation. The endowment was established to build biomedical engineering programs for the Statler College with the School of Medicine.
Nianqiang Wu, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and member of the MBRCC Allen Lung Program, was one of the award recipients. He heads up one of two funded research proposals that are cancer-related and involve HSC collaborators.

Congratulations to Sue Collins, MSN, RN, clinical research project manager in the Clinical Trials Research Unit for being selected as a “Climb Higher” nominee. Individuals chosen for this recognition are characterized as people whose hard work and commitment contribute to the success of West Virginia University, as well as make the University a wonderful place to work.

Congratulations to Abdul Alshehri, MD, (right), and Nilay Shah, MD (left), on their graduation from the WVU Department of Medicine Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program. Dr. Alshehri and Dr. Shah received their graduation certificates from MBRCC Hematology Fellowship Program Director
Thomas Hogan, MD, during a ceremony last Thursday in the MBRCC atrium. Dr. Shah also was presented this year's Fellow of the Year award, which is voted on by nurses, faculty, and administration. Dr. Shah will join the faculty in the WVU Department of Medicine effective July 1. Dr. Alshehri will work for a major hospital in Saudi Arabia.

Additionally, Dr. Shah announced that the fellows selected Dr. Abraham Kanate of the Alexander B. Osborn Hematopoietic Malignancy and Transplantation Program Clinical Service as the recipient of the Faculty of the Year award. |
WVU Men’s Hoops Alumni game to benefit Coach Huggins cancer research fund
Tickets are on sale for the WVU Men’s Hoops Alumni Game at Morgantown High School on August 1 at 7 p.m. The idea originated with former WVU men's basketball standout John Flowers. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment Fund at WVU’s Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center. Click here to purchase tickets.
