Institute participates in Health Expo at the Mountainlair
Hundreds of WVU students, faculty and staff stopped by the WVU Cancer Institute exhibits at the Mountaineer Week Health & Wellness Expoon on November 3. Visitors learned about the developmental stages of colorectal cancer as they walked through our giant, inflatable Stollin’ Colon.

Welcome Good to new role in Office of Philanthropy
Jaime Good has joined the staff of the WVU Cancer Institute Office of Philanthropy as a development specialist. As a new employee of the WVU Foundation, her office is located at the Cancer Institute’s Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center. She was formerly the clinical data manager and coordinator of the Cancer Center’s Comprehensive Breast Program.

Suncrest Primary students raise money to fight breast cancer
Suncrest Primary School is helping the WVU Cancer Institute at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center fight breast cancer. Students in pre-kindergarten through third grade held a “Change for Change” donation drive over a four-day period in October and collected nearly $505 in change for the Cancer Center. They searched their couches at home for any coins that had fallen beneath cushions and emptied their piggy banks to give to their cause.

Welcome to Dr. Mohamad Waseem Salkini
Dr. Mohamad Waseem Salkini has joined the WVU Department of Surgery and is part of our cancer care team. He is the director of robotics and minimally invasive urology and director of urologic simulation for WVU Medicine. He is the former chief of urology at John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit. He specializes in urologic oncology with an emphasis on robotic urology.
Dr. Salkini earned his medical degree at Damascus University in Syria. He completed a urology residency at Damascus University Hospitals and joined the fellowship program in laparoscopic/endourology at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. He also completed a fellowship in endourology, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery at the University of Cincinnati , Ohio. Additionally, he was a research fellow in the department of surgery, division of urology at the University of Arizona and was an instructor at the Arizona Surgical Technology and Education Center (ASTEC).
West Preston Middle School makes donation to Bonnie’s Bus

Students at West Preston Middle School in Masontown, WV, are helping the WVU Cancer Institute’s mobile digital mammography unit (Bonnie’s Bus) stay on the road. During three Wednesdays in October, the students were allowed to wear wacky cloths and hats in exchange for making a donation to Bonnie’s Bus. They raised $350 for the Bus. Additionally, they declared every Friday, Pink Out Friday and wore as much pink as possible on those days. “Through this fundraiser, our students are learning to be participants in society by helping others,” West Preston Middle School Principal Lee Livengood said. “We couldn’t ask for a better bunch of kids.”
This is the second consecutive year that West Preston Middle School students have made a donation to Bonnie’s Bus.

 Scott Weed PhD and Linda Vona-Davis PhD recently attended a conference in Kiawah Island SC for institutions belonging to the Cancer Biology Training Consortium (CABTRAC). The retreat facilitates the exchange of ideas between cancer biology programs for the development of cancer researchers and clinician scientists. The consortium works closely with over 80 institutions within the US as well as the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Training Branch to recommend curricula and establish best practices for cancer biology training programs nationwide.
WVU cancer care exhibits a hit at WVU Medicine Expo

Hundreds visited the WVU cancer care and breast care exhibits at the WVU Medicine Expo at the Morgantown Mall this October. Visitors to the WVU Cancer Institute exhibit learned about all the oncology services available at the Cancer Institute’s Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center and 45 people signed up with the bone marrow registry. Bonnie’s Bus provided 29 mammograms and the Cancer Center, in conjunction with the Mon County Health Department and WVU Family Medicine, provided 36 clinical breast exams.
