Thank you for supporting Just Desserts fundraiser

Many thanks to everyone who came to the Just Desserts fundraiser at St. John Parish Center in Morgantown this past Saturday evening to support adult brain cancer research and patient comfort a the WVU Cancer Institute. The event featured a wide array of desserts from local eateries, doorprizes and a silent auction including a variety of unique items. Proceeds from the special evening benefited the Let the Journey Begin Fund that was created at the Cancer Institute’s Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center in 2011 by Erin (Poppy) Polak after learning that her aunt, Erin Dunmire was diagnosed with brain cancer.
The name of the fund was inspired by Dunmire who always told Polak that life is a journey, enjoy the moments. In just one year, Polak, her family and friends raised $25,000 by selling bracelets bearing her aunt's quote, t-shirts and other items. The amount was enough to endow the Let The Journey Begin Fund, which continues to grow thanks to ongoing grassroots efforts such as Just Desserts. To learn more about Let The Journey Begin

Research conducted by WVU Cancer Institute member Dr. Anne Swisher, director of scholarship development in the WVU School of Medicine Division of Physical Therapy, was selected for presentation at the 2016 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting in Chicago on June 6. The title of Swisher’s poster was Longitudinal Study of Impairments, Function, and Quality of Life Following Mastectomy. Since Swisher was unable to attend the meeting, WVU co-author Adham Salkeni presented the research. Additional WVU co-authors are Hannah Hazard, MD and Jessica Partin, MD.

Men's basketball team lends a helping hand

It may have been an early riser Tuesday morning for coach Bob Huggins and his West Virginia University men’s basketball players, but that didn’t keep them from sticking around as long as it took to hand out every single item of food they had to give out to hundreds of struggling families out of work or in need of food in Boone County, West Virginia.
