Geraldine Jacobson, MD, chair of the WVU Department of Radiation Oncology and physician-in-chief of radiation oncology for the WVU Cancer Institute, is co-author of a special article in Practical Radiation Oncology that was named one of the “Top 25 Hottest Articles” in the journal. Choosing Wisely: The American Society for Radiation Oncology’s Top 5 list highlights radiation oncology interventions that should be discussed between physicians and patients before treatment is initiated.

Nominations being accepted for the Vice President's Awards for Outstanding Achievement
The Vice President Awards for Outstanding Achievement are requesting nominations for 2016. The purpose of these awards is to honor faculty and staff who have been recognized by their peers for outstanding accomplishment throughout all areas and schools within the Health Sciences Center. Deadline to submit nominations is March 25th.

Glenville Clinic hosts Strollin' Colon

Colon cancer is a significant problem in West Virginia. It is the 2nd leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the Mountain State. In an effort to combat this disease in their community, Minnie Hamilton Health System’s Glenville Clinic hosted a special exhibit for the public to learn about the colon in recognition of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

Second Breast Cancer Screening Evening on May 9
The WVU Cancer Institute will offer another Breast Cancer Screening Evening from 4P to 8P on Monday, May 9 in the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center Clinic. Free clinical breast exams will be offered. A clinical breast exam is a physical exam of the breast performed by a health care provider to check for lumps or other changes as defined by the National Cancer Institute. Participants will be guided to the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center for breast imaging, if needed. Mammograms may also be scheduled that day. Medicare, Medicaid, BCCSP and all private insurances are accepted. Funding is available so that all women over 40 can have mammography screening. Advance registration is required. Call 304-598-4500 by May 6.

WVU medical residents present research at national competition
Recently, Eric Interval, M.D. and Ben Addicks, M.D. competed with residents from Case Western University, the Cleveland Clinic and UPMC for the Robert and George Schein Research Awards sponsored annually by the Otolaryngology Department at UPMC. Under mentorship from Scott Weed, Ph.D., Interval's research was entitled “In Vivo Imaging for monitoring Effect of the CK2 Gene on Lymph node metastasis of a mouse Model oral SCC.” Addicks's research project was entitled “CT scan in Pediatric Rhinosinusitis: How often is it being used?” with mentorship from Hassan Ramadan, M.D., Brian Kellermeyer, M.D., and Chadi Makary, M.D. The team took third place.

Registration for The National IDeA Symposium of Biomedical Research Excellence (NISBRE) is now open and WVCTSI investigators are encouraged to register. NISBRE will be held on June 26 – 28, at the Marriot Wardman Park Hotel in Washington DC this year. This symposium will highlight the scientific and training activities and accomplishments of the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) program within the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.
Abstract submission and early registration rates will be accepted until April 29, 2016.
