Congratulations to our breast care team
The Comprehensive Breast Care Program of the WVU Cancer Institute Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center has received full accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) for another three years. Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. The breast care program's first three-year, full accreditation designation was in 2011.

An article on men and esophageal cancer written by Dr. Ghulam Abbas, a thoracic surgeon at the WVU Cancer Institute, is featured in the Pittsburgh Business Times in the Medicine Insights section. WVU Medicine is providing content to the online business journal as a way to promote its key services in the Northern Panhandle and southwestern Pennsylvania region.

WVCTSI shines spotlight on Elena Pugacheva
The West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI) Spotlight Series highlights our clinical and translational researchers and the exciting work they are doing with the institute. This series will provide an up-close look into the work WVCTSI investigators are doing every day to address the health issues facing West Virginia. The WVU Cancer Institute’s Elena Pugacheva is currently featured by WVCTSI.
Lunch and Learn Series to focus on intellectual property process
The West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI) announces a Lunch and Learn Series titled Introduction to the Intellectual Property Process from 12 – 1 pm on Sept. 12 in Room 201 at Erma Byrd.
Cancer Institute spotlights individual winners of the 2016 Awards of Excellence
The Cancer Institute continues to shine the spotlight on each faculty and employee of the Cancer Institute who won an Award of Excellence in a particular category during the 2016 Awards of Excellence reception. The awardees were nominated by their peers for distinct recognition of exceptional performance in one of several categories including quality, innovation, teamwork, accountability and service. Those categories represent the guiding principles of the Cancer Institute.

State delegate applauds work of undergraduate cancer researchers
West Virginia Delegate Barbara Fleischauer is impressed with the work being done by our undergraduate cancer researchers. Delegate Fleischauer attended this year’s poster session for WVU’s Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium (SURE) where she talked to Kensey Bergdorf and Osa Benjy-Osarenkhoe about their research focused on glioblastoma multiforma. Kensey and Osa are students in Dr. John Barnett’s lab in the WVU Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology.

Colorectal Cancer Summit slated in August
Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in West Virginia. Mountains of Hope (MOH), West Virginia's statewide cancer coalition facilitated by WVUCI's Cancer Prevention and Control, invites you to join us as we welcome both local and national experts to discuss ways to increase CRC screening. MOH will host its second regional Colorectal Cancer Summit this year on August 30, 2017 in Beckley, WV. Registration is free and open to anyone interested in CRC screening including advocates, health care providers, navigators, social workers, and organizations.
WVU volleyball team to host Pink match on Oct 21
The Mountaineers will host their annual Pink match on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 1 pm against K-State. The team will don pink jerseys in support of breast cancer awareness. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the Coliseum and can receive the official pink shirt of WVU athletics with a donation of $10 or more to the WVU Cancer Institute.
DeLynn Lecture to feature Deborah Schrag, MD, MPH of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Deborah Schrag, MD, MPH, Chief, Division of Population Sciences, Department of Medical Oncology and Senior Physician Gastrointestinal Oncology Center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, will present the 2017 DeLynn Lecture at 4 pm on September 21 in the HSC Fukushima Auditorium at the Health Sciences Center. There will be a reception in the Commons Area of the Learning Center afterwards. The lecture series is hosted by the WVU Cancer Institute.
WVU to participate in national study of PhD student outcomes
West Virginia University will be participating as an affiliate partner in a collective effort spearheaded by the Council of Graduate Schools to gather and use data about the careers of Ph.D. students and alumni. The broad-based survey will collect data about Ph.D. careers in both STEM and humanities fields and is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
WVU’s cancer program makes strong showing in US News & World Report
The high performing score that US News and World Report gave WVU Medicine-WVU Hospitals for its cancer program in the magazine’s recent Best Hospitals rankings shows how strong our cancer program is. We were evaluated based on various data categories, and scored “excellent” in most of them, including patient survival, nurse staffing, advanced technology and patient services. Our high performing score places us in the top 10 percent of cancer programs in the nation.
Cancer Institute’s Cancer Prevention and Control wins first place ribbons
Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC) program staff won two first place ribbons at the 2017 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Cancer Conference in Atlanta this August. They were invited to present three posters for the overall National conference and an oral presentation for the CDC Colorectal Cancer Control Program Meeting.
Staff from Cancer Prevention and Control and the Bonnie Wells Wilson Mobile Mammography Program were on hand at the Aug. 17 Black Bears game in Morgantown to talk to fans about Bonnie’s Bus and share information about breast cancer prevention.
