A message from Cancer Institute Director Rich Goldberg on the passing of longtime Cancer Institute friend David Allen
Friends and Colleagues,
It is with great sadness that I share with you that David Allen passed away unexpectedly on September 21. David was a longtime supporter of the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center and member of our leadership council. He willingly devoted his time and talent to benefit others. David did a masterful job documenting the history of the Cancer Center in “The History of MBRCC,” an enlightening recollection of the development and growth of the state’s premier cancer research and treatment center, which included three sections – Mary Babb Randolph biography, Why a cancer center?, and the DeLynn Lecture Series.
David was a visionary and an accomplished author. He proposed and supported “Cancer Stories: Lessons in Love, Loss, and Hope,” a project of the WVU School of Journalism and the MBRCC. The hour-long documentary won a regional emmy award. The final chapter in the companion book was written by David.
Additionally, David co-wrote and produced the video “Therapy and Beyond: Aquatic Therapy for Spinal Cord Injuries” for WVU’s Exercise Physiology department. He was also a contributing columnist to the West Virginia “State Journal” and newsletter editor for the Appalachian Blacksmiths Association.
The Sara Crile Allen and James Frederick Allen Lung Cancer Program at the WVU Cancer Institute was made possible by the generosity of David’s family.
A graveside service will be held at the Bridgeport Cemetery on Wednesday, October 4 at 11 a.m. Please keep David’s family in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. David’s obituary |
