Dine Out for Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day set for Oct. 18

WVU Medicine’s plastic and reconstructive surgeons are partnering with local restaurants in Dine Out for Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day on Wednesday, October 18 to help raise awareness of breast reconstruction options available to women following breast cancer surgery. Local restaurants participating in BRA Day throughout the day will donate a percentage of their total receipts to a fund at WVU for patient education and assistance to uninsured and underinsured women seeking breast reconstruction. Toothman Ford kicks off annual campaign to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer
Toothman Ford of Grafton is driving home the breast cancer awareness message while supporting the work of the WVU Cancer Institute and the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center. So far this year, the dealership has raised more than $2,000. Toothman Ford donates the chase car used by the Cancer Institute’s Bonnie Wells Wilson Mobile Mammography Program.
New Tobacco Cessation Group Starting October 24th
Cancer Prevention and Control is offering a five-session tobacco cessation support group for cancer patients and their families starting on October 24th. The program is designed to support patient’s efforts to eliminate tobacco products from their life. The Program will offer five one-hour support sessions conducted by certified tobacco treatment specialists and includes educational materials as well as information about nicotine replacement products. The program is free for everyone. It will be held on Tuesday nights from 6-7 PM at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center in Morgantown in room G801. The dates for the program are October 24 and 31, and November 7, 14, and 28th. WVU to hold inaugural Day of Giving Nov. 8
On Nov. 8, West Virginia University will hold its first Day of Giving, a 24-hour online fundraising effort to support the University’s greatest priorities and opportunities, and those of the WVU Cancer Institute.

WVU women’s soccer “pink” game raises breast cancer awareness and support

Many thanks to the WVU women’s soccer team and their fans who came out to watch the Mountaineers beat Oklahoma 5-1 during the “pink” game at Dick Dlesk Stadium in Morgantown on October 8. The game was an opportunity for both the team and fans to join the WVU Cancer Institute and WVU Medicine to raise breast cancer awareness and support the fight against breast cancer. Cancer Institute Director Rich Goldberg, representatives of the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center and the Bonnie Wells Wilson Mobile Mammography Program (Bonnie’s Bus), and assistant women’s soccer coach Marisa Kanela were called to the field for halftime recognition and an announcement that the Mountaineers raised nearly $9,000 for the Cancer Institute’s Betty Puskar Breast Care Center during the team’s annual spring fundraiser. Additionally, Mountaineer fans donated more than $1,300 and each received the official pink Mountaineer T-shirt. Cancer Institute donor Jo Statler is featured in WV Living as among the Wonder Women class of 2017. The women selected by the magazine are considered committed to doing the things necessary to make our state a better place to live. Jo and her husband Ben made a donation to the WVU Cancer Institute to help launch Bonnie’s Bus. The article about Jo Statler is titled Detection on Wheels.

Dr. Kira S. Makarova is a Staff Scientist at the National Center for Biotechnology Information, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. She works in the Computational Biology Branch in Dr. Eugene Koonin’s group focusing her research in many areas of comparative genomics and analysis of structure, function and evolution of protein families.

She earned her undergraduate degree at West Virginia Wesleyan where she also completed internships with the Family Guidance Center in Hickory, NC. After earning her masters in social work with a certificate in gerontology at WVU, she completed internships with the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center and Ruby Memorial Hospital’s Care Management Department. |
