Radiation Oncology share memories of Julie Dranbauer
Radiation Oncology staff have fond and lasting memories of their colleague Julie Dranbauer who passed away recently. Julie was a radiation therapist and part of the WVU Hospital team for almost 30 years. They remember how much fun she was to work with and what a great friend she was. “I felt like she was the heart of our department,” Annette Fox said. Coworkers said Julie liked to laugh and her laughter echoed down the hallway. “She made a Monday fun, and not too many people can do that,” Bobby Bice said. Even the patients found Julie funny and one of them jokingly had a shirt made that read ‘I survived Julie’ and wore it on his last day of radiation treatment. Coworkers said Julie also had a serious side and was a very good friend. “She was a very good listener and kept thoughts you shared with her in confidence,” Kathy Hayes said. “She made you feel special, and I don’t think she realized the impact she had on us,” Mary Kay Kolat added. The Radiation Oncology team took up a collection for Julie’s husband and their children and presented them with $1,600 in gift cards and cash inside a wallet. Coworkers said Julie loved her family very much and they are very grateful for the time they had to work with her. |

A message from Cancer Institute Director Rich Goldberg on the passing of longtime Cancer Institute friend Pam Bakalarski
 Pam and Lee Bakalarski |
Friends and Colleagues,
It is with sadness that I inform you that one of our loyal Cancer Institute Council members, Pam Bakalarski passed away this past Tuesday. Her husband, Lee, was by her side at the time that she passed away. Like all of us Pam was passionate about making things better for people with cancer and endured her own issues with cancer which she bravely spoke about at the gala last spring. She devoted not only her volunteer efforts but also her career to helping the world to make progress in dealing with this disease. We are proud of Pam’s efforts and are grateful to have had the opportunity to honor her with the Crystal Ribbon Award for her advocacy of clinical trials research during the Evening of Hope, Innovation and Partnership gala event. The award was designed to encompass and inspire the three attributes of hope, innovation and partnership. Pam exemplified each of those. We are grateful for having her touch our lives.
Please join me in keeping Lee and his family in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
