, associate chair of surgery for WVU Cancer Services, has been honored for outstanding achievement by WVU Health Sciences Vice President and Executive Dean Clay Marsh, MD.  During the Annual Vice President’s Achievement Awards ceremony this past week, Hazard-Jenkins was presented the 2018 WISH (Women In Science & Health) Mid-Career Excellence Award.

WVU Medicine announced Tuesday (April 3) that Carl Schmidt, M.D., a nationally recognized surgical oncologist specializing in cancers of the liver, pancreas, and stomach will join the WVU Cancer Institute in July.


WVU community meets new Cancer Institute and Neuroscience Institute leader Courtney DeVries


WVU faculty, staff and students recently had an opportunity to meet and learn more about A. Courtney DeVries, PhD, who holds major leadership roles in the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute and the WVU Cancer Institute.  Dr. DeVries, a professor in the Section of Hematology/Oncology in the WVU School of Medicine Department of Medicine with a joint appointment as a member of the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, presented a special seminar last week titled Getting By With A Little Help From Our Friends: Mechanisms Underlying Social Influences on Health.  DeVries also holds the John T. and June R. Chambers Chair of Oncology Research in the WVU Cancer Institute.

, a cancer cell biology graduate student in Patrick Ma’s lab at the WVU Cancer Institute, has won a Rising Star Award from the WVU Health Sciences Center Office of Research and Graduate Education.   The award recognizes outstanding graduate students and faculty at the Health Sciences Center.  Earlier this year, Lim’s lung cancer research earned him an American Association of Immunologists Young Investigator Award for his first place oral presentation at the 21st annual meeting of the Translational Research Cancer Centers Consortium at Seven Springs, PA. 


Foundation donates iPads to WVU Medicine Children’s

The Walking Miracles Foundation has partnered with Shentel Corporation/Sprint in Teays Valley to donate 10 Apple iPads to children undergoing cancer treatment at WVU Medicine Children’s to help caregivers and survivors navigate treatment and the next steps of getting back to their lives.


WVU Camp Kesem accepting camper applications

WVU Camp Kesem, a free-of-charge summer camp for children of cancer patients, is still accepting campers for a week of fun activities at Camp Sandy Cove in High View, West Virginia, Hampshire County, June 10-15.  To register a camper.

WVU is one of several colleges around the country that host a Camp Kesem summer camp between June and August for children, ages 6 to 18, who’ve been affected by a parent’s cancer.  Camp Kesem is a nationwide community, driven by passionate college student leaders supporting children through and beyond their parent’s cancer.

This year’s Gold Blue & You Campus Campaign is in full swing, providing WVU faculty and staff and WVU Medicine employees an opportunity to directly impact the WVU community through their charitable donations.  The Cancer Institute’s M.B. Randolph Cancer Institute Program Enhancement and Project Fund is one of the funds featured in the Gold Blue & You brochure.  Please pick up a brochure at one of  these Cancer Institute locations:  first floor lobby beneath the infostation, in hematology/oncology (Annorah Cale’s office) and in the MBRCC clinic breakrooms.


WVU researcher investigates role of misfolded proteins in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease

Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease may have more in common than their effects on the functions of the brain and spinal cord. And finding that common thread could lead to a treatment that could work for all three. A recent study by David Smith, associate professor of biochemistry in the School of Medicine, suggests that at the heart of all three diseases may be misfolded proteins that are shaped in similar ways.  Dr. Smith is a WVU Cancer Institute member.


WVU Medicine joins 38 other leading health systems in a partnership with Apple for Health app access

WVU Medicine patients can now utilize the Apple iPhone’s Health app to view their medical records. The app will complement the services currently offered through the MyWVUChart app.


WVU Cancer Institute featured in AACI UPDATE

The WVU Cancer Institute is featured twice in the April 2018 issue of the Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI) UPDATE.  One of the items in the e-newsletter focuses on WVU’s Clinical Trials Research Unit being recognized as among top ten for accrual; the other item is about the WVU Cancer Institute’s participation in a groundbreaking clinical research study.

Fitness Center Closing

The fitness center in the WVU Cancer Institute will close on April 16 and be relocated to the 4th floor of the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute re-opening on July 18. The new hours of operation will be: 11:00 am – 12:30 pm / 3:00 pm – 6:30 am Monday – Friday and unlimited access on Saturday & Sunday. 

There are gap period membership options available at 3 local fitness centers.

Software Carpentry Workshop on ‘R’ to be held

The Research Office, in collaboration with the University Libraries, is pleased to announce the next Software Carpentry Workshop. The two-day course will run from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 21 and 22 (Sat/Sun) in the Downtown Library, Lower Level room 104 and is aimed at graduate students, postdocs, staff and faculty.  You don't have to have any previous experience with “R;” just come with your laptop, prepared to learn. WVCTSI to offer NIH R03 Intensive Grant Writing Groups

WVCTSI has announced the formation of an intensive writing group designed for investigators interested in developing National Institutes of Health (NIH) R03 applications. This five-week intensive writing group will begin in May and offers participants the opportunity to receive structured guidance and feedback on their application for the June 2018 submission deadline.


WVCTSI accepting applications for Summer 2018 K Grant Writing Group; multiple information sessions to be held

WVCTSI is now accepting applications for the Summer 2018 WVCTSI K Grant Writing Groups (K-Clubs). These groups are designed for early career faculty and postdocs conducting clinical and/or translational research who are interested in applying for an NIH Mentored Career Development Award (“K” Award) for the October 2018 NIH submission deadline.

WVCTSI will host a series of information sessions that will provide K Program details and a writing group application/participation overview.


Community-based research town hall scheduled for April 19

WVCTSI and the WVU Mountaineer Health Initiative are co-sponsoring a town hall meeting to highlight research taking place across the state. “Conversation and Collaboration: A Town Hall Gathering of WVU Community-Based Researchers and Outreach Staff,” offers attendees the chance to learn about the range of community engaged research and outreach across the state, meet colleagues engaged in similar work, identify common issues, and ascertain better ways to support each other in the field.
 This event will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. on April 19 in the WVU New Agricultural Sciences Building room G06. Beverages and hors D’oeuvres will be provided and participants will have an opportunity for networking and small group discussions.


Clinical trials seminar scheduled for April 20

WVCTSI will begin a new four-part Clinical and Translational Research Seminar Series focusing on clinical trials. During the first installment in this new series, Tanya Moran, MS, WVCTSI senior quality assurance and auditing manager, and Shelley Welch, RN, MSHS, CCRC, WVCTSI clinical research services manager, will present “Clinical Trial Data: Good Documentation Practices.”
 This seminar will be held Friday, April 20 from 1 to 2 p.m. in room 301 of the WVU Health Sciences Center Erma Byrd Biomedical Research Building. Contact Renice Gray at renice.gray@hsc.wvu.edu for additional information.
