Mobile Lung Cancer Screening Program To Assist In Early Detection

The WVU Cancer Institute is applying for a Certificate of Need with the West Virginia Health Care Authority for a mobile lung cancer screening program, which will be called LUCAS. This program would increase access to screening for patients in rural areas and address the growing demand for cancer services in the state.

Nationally, fewer than 2 percent of people who are eligible receive lung cancer screening. In nearly 75 percent of newly diagnosed lung cancers, the disease has already spread to other areas of the body, making it more difficult to treat. It is the goal of this program to provide early detection in order for those diagnosed with lung cancer to have better long-term outcomes.

NIH-FUNDED SCIENTISTS PUT SOCIOECONOMIC DATA ON THE MAP

The Neighborhood Atlas www.neighborhoodatlas.medicine.wisc.edu , a new tool to help researchers visualize socioeconomic data at the community level is now available. This online platform allows for easily ranking and mapping neighborhoods according to socioeconomic disadvantage. Seeing a neighborhood's socioeconomic measures, such as income, education, employment and housing quality, may provide clues to the effects of those factors on overall health, and could inform health resources policy and social interventions. The Neighborhood Atlas is housed at the University of Wisconsin, and described in a perspective in the June 28 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. The project is funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), both part of the National Institutes of Health.
