Rally builds excitement for Relay
WVU Cancer Institute and WVU Medicine faculty, staff and students are gearing up for the 2018 American Cancer Society Monongalia County Relay For Life in June. During a Relay rally this past Friday in the Cancer Center Atrium, Cancer Institute Director Rich Goldberg, MD, told rally participants that the Cancer Institute has had a great relationship with the American Cancer Society over the years.
Free CE Course for Oral Health Providers
This free CE course on Friday, March 23 at the Robert H. Mollohan Research Center at the I-79 Technology Park in Fairmont will focus on HPV infection, precancers, cancer, vaccination and early detection in the morning, and will cover the oral effects of drugs and other substances in the afternoon. Sponsors include the West Virginia Immunization Network, American Cancer Society, West Virginia Oral Health Program and the Mountains of Hope Cancer Coalition.

The Department of Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences at the WVU School of Public Health is hosting a celebration from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. April 20 in the Pylons Area, Health Sciences Center, North. Dr. Ducatman is a WVU Cancer Institute member.

WVCTSI and the WVU Office of Research and Graduate Education are cohosting a workshop to highlighting building effective relationships with program officers. In “Building Relationships with Program Officers,” a panel of research leaders from Marshall University and WVU will lead discussions on a variety of topics including the conducting of site visits and cultivating relationships with program officers over time. This workshop will also include a breakout session that will focus on refining a 3-minute pitch to your program officer. Attendees should prepare a pitch in advance to share with the panel of experts.

Dr. Martinez presents research at Gottingen University-Max Planck Institutes in Germany, collaborations with Cancer Institute to follow
WVU Cancer Institute’s Dr. Ivan Martinez and his lab will engage in collaborative research with their colleagues at The German Primate Center, part of the Gottingen University-Max Planck Institutes in Germany, later this year.
Dr. Martinez’s research on the role of RNAs in cancer development piqued the interest of Dr. Jens Gruber, professor at The Primate Center and his graduate student Nicolas Lemus, and they invited Martinez to their country recently to talk about his work at the Cancer Institute. They were especially interested in Martinez’s project related to the discovery of an alternative pathway of microRNA biogenesis. Part of this project was recently published in the Journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS, 2017).

Science advocate, author to speak at WVU
Paul A. Offit, M.D., has built an international reputation defending science and medicine against attack. But he doesn’t think scientists never make mistakes. He’s planning to visit West Virginia University March 23 to talk about what we can learn from the laboratory mishaps of the past.
School board donation to benefit cancer research
The Monongalia County Board of Education has made a donation to the WVU Cancer Institute to support clinical research. Board members Dr. Clarence Harvey, Jr., Mike Kelly, Nancy Walker, Dr. Barbara Parsons, and Ron Lytle, along with superintendent Dr. Frank Devono and former board member Joe Statler, recently directed their gift to the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment Fund in memory of their friend and colleague Stephen Cook who passed away early this month.

WVU Medicine Otolaryngology, WVU School of Dentistry to offer free oral cancer screenings
WVU Medicine Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, with assistance from the WVU School of Dentistry, will provide free oral cancer screenings from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 7, at the Otolaryngology Clinic at the Physician Office Center (POC) in Morgantown.
