HSC Vice President's Awards to honor Stephenie Kennedy-Rea


West Virginia University Health Sciences will be honoring 14 individuals, including Stephenie Kennedy-Rea, associate director for Cancer Prevention and Control, for outstanding achievement in service on Wednesday (April 10) at 4 p.m. in the Pylons Lobby. The ceremony is open to the entire Health Sciences community and we hope you will join us to congratulate Stephenie on this well earned award.

Institute to Offer Spring Screen Day

On Saturday, May 18th from 8-12,  the MBRCC will be hosting a one day screening event.  Screenings offered will be skin, oral, breast, lung, and cervical (to those who qualify).

Bonnie’s Bus and Strollin’ Colon will be on site, cancer education, and UML on site to offer Direct Access Lab tests for a fee.  Participants will be able to register for more than 1 screening. Registration information to be released in a couple weeks.

THANK YOU to those who have already volunteered, however, to make this first time event a success we need a few more volunteers.  I know it is a Saturday, but if you can offer just a few hours it would be appreciated.

We are still looking for providers to perform clinical breast exams and need at least 2 more.

CCB Students recognized at Tea Time

In recognition of Graduate Student Appreciation Week, the WVUCI honored CCB graduate students at this month’s tea time. There was cake along with traditional Tea Time goodies. Students were recognized during Tea Time by the CCB Scholarship Committee.


In addition, the CCB Graduate Student of the Year for 2018-2019 was announced. Congratulations to Tayvia Brownmiller who was selected by the CCB faculty. She received a $500 travel award.


West Virginia University revs up computer resources to help move region forward


West Virginia University, in partnership with the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, announced Tuesday the creation of one of the state’s most powerful computer clusters to help power research and innovation statewide. The announcement came as the University kicked off its inaugural Research Week.


WVU Relay for Life team The Mad Scientists

The WVU Relay for Life event is rapidly approaching and anyone who wishes to donate or attend needs to be registered. Our team is called the “Mad Scientists” and we need your support!  This is a BIG event for our graduate students and they have raised $1,035 toward their $1,500 goal. 

As a reminder, the event will take place on Friday, April 12 from 6PM-Midnight at the Shell building next to the Coliseum. Community-engaged research seminar scheduled for April 12

WVCTSI’s Clinical and Translational Research Seminar Series will host its final session of the series focusing on effectively engaging the community in a research agenda. Sally Hodder, M.D., WVCTSI director and associate vice president for clinical and translational science at WV, will present, “Strategies for Developing and Engaging a Successful Community Advisory Board.”

This session will take place Friday, April 12 from 12 to 1 p.m. in room 201 of the WVU Health Sciences Center Erma Byrd Biomedical Research Building.


Seminar on community research strategies available to view on YouTube

The recent session in WVCTSI’s Clinical and Translational Research Seminar Series focusing on community-based research is now available to view on YouTube. In “Best Strategies and Models for Community-Based Participatory Research,” Sally Hurst, director of outreach programs, and Drema Mace, Ph.D., executive director, both with the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine Center for Rural and Community Health, present on best practices and effective strategies for conducting research in West Virginia Communities.

Martinez Lab welcomes new technician

Brandon Harvey will be joining the lab. He is originally from Cross Lanes, WV and finished his B.S. in Chemistry at Marshall University. He has some previous research experience in Dr. Gary O. Rankin’s laboratory at Marshall University and he was recently accepted to the PharmD program in the School of Pharmacy at WVU.

WV-INBRE Request For Cancer Biology Grant Applications

The WV-INBRE program has funds for the support of small biomedical research of grants in Cancer Biology. This solicitation is open to applications from investigators at West Virginia University, Marshall University and WV partner institutions (PUI) that are part of the WV-INBRE network. Areas of interest include but are not limited to mechanisms of cancer development (e.g. genetic and epigenetic modifications) and mechanisms of cancer drug action and drug resistance.

(Please note application deadline is extended to Apr. 22, 2019)

WVU IRB Fees Increasing for Industry Sponsored Studies

In response to rising costs associated with growing regulatory demands related to clinical research, fees associated with reviews of industry sponsored clinical trials involving human subjects research will be increasing as of July 1, 2019.

The Association funds research grants for PhDs or MDs who are conducting the most promising research into leukemia, in the hopes of isolating the causes and finding a cure for this dread disease.


Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer
Upcoming Deadline: Application: May 20, 2019
Reach Grants are designed to move hypothesis-driven research into the clinic. The grant is intended to fund developmental therapeutic studies in the late stage of preclinical testing. A successful application will identify an unmet clinical need relevant to the care of pediatric patients with cancer and describe how the work performed will allow for the translation to the clinic within two years of completion.
