Bonnie’s Bus and Strollin’ Colon will be on site, cancer education, and UML on site to offer Direct Access Lab tests for a fee.  Participants will be able to register for more than 1 screening. Registration information to be released in a couple weeks.

THANK YOU to those who have already volunteered, however, to make this first time event a success we need a few more volunteers.  I know it is a Saturday, but if you can offer just a few hours it would be appreciated.

We are still looking for providers to perform clinical breast exams and need at least 2 more.

Please let Pam Foley or Crystal Street know if you can help out!

Vona-Davis and Cifarelli present at recent AACR meeting

Linda Vona Davis stands in front of her AACR poster.
Linda Vona-Davis, PhD in the WVU Department of Surgery and member of the WVU Cancer Institute Breast Cancer Research Program, presented a poster at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research held in Atlanta on March 29- April 3, 2019.  The title of the poster was “Molecular profile of tumor-associated adipose in women with breast cancer”.  Contributing authors were Niel Infante and James Coad from West Virginia University, Don Primerano and James Denvir from Marshall University.  Briefly, the fat tissue close to malignant lesions exhibited distinctive gene expression profiles and functional characteristics between lean and obese women with breast cancer. The results of the study will help provide clues about the link between obesity and adverse breast cancer risk and outcome.

Christopher P. Cifarelli standing with his AACR poster.
Christopher P. Cifarelli, MD, PhD, director of the Gamma Knife program and assistant professor in the WVU SOM Department of Neurosurgery, presented his research on glioblastoma and radiation sensitivity.   The project, which is part of the Tumor Microenvironment CoBRE grant from the NIH, has identified a potential target for increasing the effectiveness of radiation in treating these fatal brain tumors.  He worked on the project with Dr. Austin Vargo, Ian MacFawn, and Dr. Steven Frisch.
