So, ho, ho, ho your way home with some holiday cheer.

Take the WVU Staff Sustainability Survey and you could win a prize pack

As part of our land-grant mission, WVU is committed to ensuring a more sustainable future — across our state and around the world. And to help shape our efforts to make our campuses, policies and processes more sustainable for students, faculty and staff, the Office of Sustainability wants to hear from WVU staff employees.

Holiday celebrations scheduled for Dec. 11 (night shift) and Dec. 13 (day shift)

Both events are free to employees and will feature a variety of appetizers and sweet treats from WVU Medicine Catering and WVU’s Culinary Creations. All faculty and staff are encouraged to attend; no take-out will be available.

WVU obesity specialist aims to improve doctor-patient relationships

Despite the American Medical Association’s designation of obesity as a disease in 2013, many healthcare providers still place blame on patients for their weight.

“It’s a real problem,” Dr. Laura Davisson, an obesity specialist and associate program director for internal medicine at West Virginia University, said.

Davisson said when patients feel shame, they will often disconnect entirely from the healthcare system, which can lead to even more health problems. Studies have shown fat shaming, in both children and adults, can lead to depression, increased social isolation and less success with weight loss.

The Health Plan, a managed care organization headquartered in Wheeling and operating throughout West Virginia, and The West Virginia University Health System, operating under the brand WVU Medicine, have mutually agreed to terminate the May 1, 2019, transaction agreement, which means they will not become a single entity, according to a news release.

Meet the data management team at the WVUCI Clinical Research Unit

Left to Right: Pamela Rayl, managing gastrointestinal, gynecologic, and leukemia data; Bobbie Arbogast, managing long-term patient follow ups and cooperative group data; Hellen Fasinu, managing lymphoma and genitourinary data; Shannon Corso, managing breast data; Dylan Opyoke, managing thoracic, head and neck, and brain data.

Our data managers report information about the effects of trial medication on patients enrolled in clinical trials. They enter all collected data into protocol-specific databases and ensure it is reported clearly and accurately.

Senior data manager, Pamela Rayl, CCRP, began working with the Clinical Research Unit in 2010. She manages all data from gastrointestinal, gynecologic, and leukemia trials. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from West Virginia University in 2005 and her CCRP certification in 2015. She is an avid fan of music of all sorts and loves to laugh.

Bobbie Arbogast, CCRP, began working with the CRU in 2013. She has since managed all clinical data for thoracic, head and neck, and NCTN/cooperative group trials. She will transition to a patient follow-up role for all clinical trials at the beginning of 2020. Her passion is fundraising for many different organizations, with her last raising $20,000 for the Cancer Center Comfort Fund. She is a Mountaineer through-and-through and attends as many home football games as she can!

Hellen Fasinu, BS, MPA, joins the team as the new data manager for lymphoma and genitourinary trials. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from WVU in 2011 and her Master’s in Public Administration in 2014. Previously a hospital case manager at Chestnut Ridge, Hellen has four years’ experience of data and program management.

Shannon Corso, BS, is the new data manager for the breast team. Having earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Fairmont State University in 2002, she has previously worked in case management and supported employment services through Options Employment Services. In her spare time, she volunteers at an animal rescue and is a lover of nature and literature.

Dylan Opyoke, BA, MPA, joins the CRU as our new data manager of thoracic, head and neck, and brain trials. A graduate of WVU, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Anthropology in 2014 and a Masters of Public Administration in 2017. He has five years’ management experience in real estate and hospitality, and is an animal lover. He volunteers for the Morgantown Spay and Neuter Assistance Program (MSNAP) in his free time.
