Cancer prevention expert to address cervical cancer in Appalachia


Cervical cancer rates are higher among women in Appalachia due to a variety of factors ranging from health policy to biology. Next month, epidemiologist and cancer prevention researcher Electra Paskett, Ph.D., will visit the WVU Health Sciences Center to explain how these factors can help identify possible interventions to reverse this trend.

Paskett will join the WVU School of Public Health’s 2019-2020 Dean’s Colloquium Series on Friday, Nov. 1, 2019. Her lecture, “A Multi-Level Model to Address Cervical Cancer Disparities in Appalachia,” will be in 1175 Health Sciences Center-North (Okey Patteson Auditorium) from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Opportunities for audience Q&A will follow the presentations. The event is free and open to the public. For those who cannot attend, a live webcast will be available online.

October Session Of Survivors Club To Focus On Upcoming Medicare Coverage Changes

The October session of The Survivors Club will meet on 10/9/19 from 6-7:30 PM in Conference room 3A at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center. Invited guest speakers include David Summers and Jessica Ice. Mr. David Summers is the regional representative for the Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP). SHIP is a non-profit federal program that assists senior citizens, disabled individuals, and caregivers who have questions or problems relating to Medicaid, Medicare and related coverage. SHIP counselors are trained in the regulations and laws pertaining to medical coverage for elderly and disabled individuals. SHIP counselors are not affiliated with any insurance company or provider. They are able to provide non-biased information and assistance to help people select medical coverage that meets their needs. There is no charge for any of their services. Mr. Summers will also educate our group on Medicare open enrollment season (October 15, 2019 – December 7, 2019). During the annual enrollment season, Medicare recipients can make changes to various aspects of their coverage including switching from traditional Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan or changing their Medicare Part D plan.

We are also excited to have Jessica Ice, Executive Director for West Virginias for Affordable Health Care, a state-run non-partisan group. Jessica will discuss the status and any possible changes/challenges to the ACA Marketplace (“Obamacare”). Additionally, she will present on the state health care agenda and provide our group with information on how we could all become more active constituents to improve healthcare for the people of West Virginia.

Shelly Dusic, MA is a Policy and Environmental Change, Community-Clinic Linkage Specialist for the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program (WVBCCSP). Working from WVU Cancer Institute's Cancer Prevention and Control, Shelly partners with employers from throughout the state to increase cancer screening rates and promote the early detection of cancer. Employer-based support for cancer screening facilitates employee health and benefits employers by reducing healthcare costs.

West Virginia Collegiate Business Plan Competition
The goal of the competition is to provide students with the education, skills, contacts, and motivation necessary to create a viable start-up company in West Virginia. Two grand prize packages consisting of $10,000 cash, accounting, and legal assistance are awarded to the top team in each category, and $20,000 of additional at-large money is also awarded to various finalist teams. The competition is free to enter and is open to all students. Deadline November 15.
