Libraries hosting workshops on Open Access publishing
“Dispelling the Myths about Open Access: Making Informed Choices about Open Access Publishing Opportunities” is a free Research Commons workshop that will define characteristics of open access vs. traditional publishing venues, discuss ways to evaluate open access journal quality, including the identification of predatory journals; list tools available to find an appropriate journal in which to publish and discuss ways in which WVU Libraries is supporting WVU authors to publish in open access journals.
Attend one of these sessions:
-
Oct. 15, from 2-3 p.m. in the Evansdale Library, Room G16.
-
Oct. 23, from 2-3 p.m. in the Downtown Campus Library, Room 2036.

Cancer prevention expert to address cervical cancer in Appalachia, Nov. 1

Cervical cancer rates are higher among women in Appalachia due to a variety of factors ranging from health policy to biology. Next month, epidemiologist and cancer prevention researcher Electra Paskett, Ph.D., will visit the WVU Health Sciences Center to explain how these factors can help identify possible interventions to reverse this trend.
Paskett will join the WVU School of Public Health’s 2019-2020 Dean’s Colloquium Series on Friday, Nov. 1, 2019. Her lecture, “A Multi-Level Model to Address Cervical Cancer Disparities in Appalachia,” will be in 1175 Health Sciences Center-North (Okey Patteson Auditorium) from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Opportunities for audience Q&A will follow the presentations. The event is free and open to the public. For those who cannot attend, a live webcast will be available online.
WVU In the News: Morgantown Magazine: A Fantastical Fundraiser
(Article about Vandalia-Con - a health fair and fundraiser supporting Bonnie's Bus)
In 2014 the first Vandalia-Con, a hybrid steampunk convention–health fair–cancer prevention fundraiser, came to be. Folks flocked to the Blennerhassett Hotel in true steampunk fashion―a whimsical mash-up of Victorian-era top hats and corsets outfitted with “retrofuture” accessories.
The convention is far more than cosplay. It’s cause-play. Every penny raised supports breast and cervical cancer intervention programs, namely Bonnie’s Bus. This mobile mammography unit provides breast cancer screening especially to under- and uninsured women. In five years, Vandalia-Con has given more than $25,000 to Bonnie’s Bus, and all of its in-kind donations and volunteer hours support WVBCCSP.

Grateful Patient Donates Hats To Patients At Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center for the second year in a row

Charlotte Behnke Smith recently donated 55 crocheted hats to be given to the patients at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center.
Each hat is created in a unique way with yarn that was purchased on sale at a local craft store where Behnke Smith works part-time. She crocheted the hats as a gift for other patients to say how grateful she is to her care team and hopes to spread joy to her fellow patients following her recent recovery from breast cancer surgery. |
