WVU Dependent Education Scholarship Spring 2020 deadline approaching

Dependent Education Scholarship deadline to submit applications for the Spring 2020 semester is Nov. 1. Applications for spring are not required if a student dependent has already been approved for the current fall semester.

Students eligible to receive the scholarship include dependent children of WVU, WVU Research Corporation and University Innovation Corporation benefits-eligible employees. Scholarship recipients must be enrolled as full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate students. 



Cancer Prevention and Control presents at AACR Health Disparities Meeting

Amy Allen, MA, MS, and Stephenie Kenney-Rea, EdD recently presented two posters at the American Association for Cancer Research’s (AACR) 2019 Science of Cancer Health Disparities in Rural/Ethnic Minorities and the Medically Underserved meeting in San Francisco. Stephenie and Amy were able to share our lessons learned, explore best practices, and network with colleagues from around the world. Presentation topics include:

  1. Cancer Prevention and Control’s impact on the lung cancer screening infrastructure in West Virginia with the WV Lung Cancer Project, and
  2. The WVUCI Bridge Program’s multidisciplinary survivorship care model for stage 1-3 lung cancer patients.

WVCTSI and WVU Health Sciences create research matching tool

WVCTSI and the WVU Health Sciences Center have created a new research matching tool that connects students looking for research experience with WVU faculty members seeking student assistance. Faculty members can submit information about ongoing research projects. This information can then be viewed and interested students can apply. Anyone with questions can email Meghan Reeves.

Funding for innovative approaches to scientific questions can be difficult to find as these new ideas may not yet be mainstream in the scientific community. In order to foster these novel ideas the Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer funds promising pilot studies in ovarian cancer each year.

2020 Undergraduate Research Day at the Capital

The 17th annual West Virginia Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol will be held in the West Virginia Capitol Rotunda Friday, February 7, 2020 beginning at 8:30 am. The format for the 2020 Research Day will be a poster session featuring research and creative works conducted by undergraduate students under the guidance of faculty mentors from colleges and universities across the state. The purpose of this event is to familiarize state legislators with some of the research and creative activities involving undergraduate students that occur on campuses across the state and the educational impact of those activities. We encourage undergraduates to apply/submit abstracts (due by midnight Nov. 1, 2019) to present their work. The event will showcase posters in a wide range of subjects, including the sciences, arts, social sciences, and humanities.


Clinical researchers across West Virginia have a new resource at their fingertips. In October, the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI) is launching the Principal Investigators’ (PI) Academy, which is designed to provide guidance and direction to investigators conducting or planning to conduct clinical trials.
