Deadline Approaching For Summer Undergraduate Research Program

Group of summer students in a lab.
Applications Due March 2

The West Virginia University Cancer Institute offers an undergraduate research opportunity every summer in clinical and basic cancer research. The highly competitive program provides funding and opportunities for students who want to pursue careers in cancer research. Each student receives a $4,000 stipend to cover living expenses and accommodation in Morgantown, WV. Students are responsible for securing housing. An additional $1,000 is provided for research supplies to the host lab. The student is paired with an Institute scientist for a 10-week research project. Various projects are available that provide a research experience focused upon molecular, biochemical and/or cellular approaches toward understanding the mechanism of cancer, the development of anticancer drugs and applications of nanotechnology to cancer research. The participating labs focus on blood and hematological malignancies such as leukemia or lymphoma, as well as breast, lung and head and neck cancers.

This year’s summer program will start on Monday, May 18th, 2020 and continue for 10 weeks. Students are required to prepare a poster and present the results of their summer research project at a research symposium held on the last day of the experience, Monday, July 27th, 2020.

Other Funding or Opportunities

The West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI) has released requests for applications (RFA) for the Open Competition and BIOSTART funding opportunities.

The Open Competition RFA allows applicants to request up to $50,000 in funding which must be utilized over a 12 month period. This funding opportunity seeks to find innovative research that addresses healthcare needs in West Virginia. Examples include, but are not limited to, addiction and resultant emerging epidemics, cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic lung disease, and neuroscience.

The BIOSTART RFA is offered in collaboration with the WVU Tissue Bank and the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center Tissue Procurement Program (ECCC Tissue Bank) affiliated with Marshall University for the purpose of promoting the use of tissue samples in clinical and translational science research. Investigators can request up to $10,000 in total direct costs with a maximum project period of nine months.

To assist investigators interested in applying for pilot grant funding, WVCTSI will be hosting a series of workshops on the essentials of successful grant writing. Information on sessions can be found below

  • Session 1: How to write effective specific aims and create a compelling Letter of Intent (LOI)
  • Session 2: How to write a successful approach and address innovation, significance, and scientific rigor sections
  • Session 3: Budget development and clinical trials considerations (as applicable)

Final dates and additional workshop details will be announced soon. Session one will be held prior to the April 1 LOI deadline. The remaining sessions will be held following full proposal invitations. To learn more and sign up, please contact Shruti Jaiswal at sj00004@hsc.wvu.edu
