Panagakos Named Interim Dean For The WVU School Of Dentistry
Fotinos Panagakos, DMD, PhD, has been named interim dean of the WVU School of Dentistry, effective July 1. He will assume the responsibilities held by departing dean Anthony Tom Borgia, DDS, MA, who is retiring after 10 years with the School. An experienced educator, private dental care practitioner and oral healthcare industry research expert, Panagakos will continue to serve in his current position as vice dean of administration and research.
Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute Announces Capability to Predict COVID-19 Related Symptoms Up to Three Days in Advance
The West Virginia University Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI) and WVU Medicine, in conjunction with Oura Health, have addressed a major concern regarding the spread of COVID-19. The RNI has created a digital platform that can detect COVID-19 related symptoms up to three days before they show up.
COVID-19 travel policy clarification for WVU Medicine and Health Sciences employees
Due to the nature of their work, WVU clinical faculty, residents and fellows will follow WVU Medicine guidelines on travel.
- For domestic travel: An employee who visited a domestic location and who is asymptomatic can return to work with no restrictions. The employee will be required to wear a face mask and self-monitor for symptoms.
- For international travel/cruise ship travel: An employee who visited an international location or was on a cruise ship, prior to starting or returning to work, must:
- Self-quarantine/self-monitor for 14 days (preferred option)
- If 14 days is not feasible, they must self-quarantine/self-monitor for 5 days, then return to work with a face mask for the next 9 days.
All other Health Sciences faculty, staff and students should continue following the recently issued guidance from the University:
- All University-related international travel remains prohibited and domestic business travel for WVU employees will be extremely limited and require prior approval by the unit's vice president or dean of the college/school.
- Individuals returning to the WVU campus from any location outside of West Virginia are subject to a 5-day self-quarantine/self-monitoring period. Anyone traveling for personal reasons outside of West Virginia are also subject to a 5-day self-quarantine/self-monitoring period. This does not include commuting to work.

Wellness Center set to re-open Monday, June 8
The WVU Medicine Wellness Center will be re-opening June 8 with normal hours and with limited capacity. Due to hospital visitor restrictions, the Wellness Center will be trialing a phased-in approach as only WVU Medicine employees will currently have gym access.

WVCTSI has learned that some units have advised that WVCTSI requires chair or institute director approval before seeking services. This is not true – faculty seeking services may either enter service requests in the iLab system OR contact Meghan Reeves at mreeves1@hsc.wvu.edu for direction.
Department chair sign-off is required for WVCTSI activities which require submission of an application including:
- Pilot Projects (next deadline for letters of intent is August 3, 2020),
- NIH K Award (K-Club) Grant Writing Group participation, or for
- Research Scholar Applications (the applications are currently closed).

WVCTSI releases final funding opportunities
WVCTSI has released requests for applications (RFA) for the Open Competition, Launch Pilot Grant, Small Grant funding opportunities.
The Open Competition RFA allows applicants to request up to $50,000 in funding which must be utilized over a 12 month period. This funding opportunity seeks to find innovative research that addresses healthcare needs in West Virginia. Examples include, but are not limited to, addiction and resultant emerging epidemics, cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic lung disease, and neuroscience.
The Launch Pilot Grant program focuses on accelerating the translation of intellectual property developed by WVCTSI researchers into realized inventions and patents. Applicants can request up to $50,000 in funding, which must be utilized over 9 months.
The Small Grants RFA is an open competition where applicants can request up to $5,000 in funding to address the health care needs of West Virginia. The maximum project period for small grants is 6 months.

Looking to design a new clinical trial or ask questions about an existing study? The PI Academy's Idea Lab is just the thing for you. Idea Lab sessions offer monthly meetings where PI Academy members can sign up to present their planned, current, or closing clinical trials to the group and receive feedback from our panel of experts that includes:

WVCTSI is accepting applications for the K Grant Writing Groups (K-Clubs). These groups are designed for early career faculty and postdocs conducting clinical and/or translational research who are interested in applying for an NIH Mentored Career Development Award (“K” Award) for the October 2020 NIH submission deadline.

WVCTSI is accepting applications for an intensive writing group designed for clinical and translational investigator interested in developing an NIH R03 or R21 grant application. This writing group will begin in August and offer participants the opportunity to receive structured guidance and feedback on their application for the October 2020 NIH submission deadline.
