Innovative Technique at WVU Medicine and WVU School of Dentistry To Improve Oral Cancer Patients’ Outcomes, Healing Times

The WVU Medicine Otolaryngology, WVU Dental, and School of Dentistry team following a procedure using the Alberta Reconstructive Technique. Left to Right: Dr. Ryan McCloy, Dr. Matthew Harper, Dr. Meghan Turner, Dr. William Stokes, and Dr. Jeffson Chung

When oral cancers are advanced and invade the jawbone, patients need to have their jawbone removed, along with the teeth. The jawbone can be reconstructed using fibular bone, but cancer patients usually have to wait many months or even years to get prosthetic teeth after their cancer treatment.

However, a recent collaboration between West Virginia University’s School of Dentistry and WVU Medicine will allow oral cancer patients to receive dental implants at the time of cancer surgery through an innovative approach called the Alberta Reconstructive Technique.

Integration of Imaging and Fluid-Based Tumor Monitoring in Cancer Therapy (R01 Clinical Trial Optional)
NCI invites R01 grant applications describing projects that integrate imaging and fluid-based tumor monitoring (liquid biopsy) assays during cancer therapy in patients to determine the optimal use of these modalities in the characterization of therapy response and/or emergence of treatment resistance.
Funding: Up to $500K per year for 5 years
Deadline: Standard NIH deadlines starting September 5, 2021

Molecular Imaging of Inflammation in Cancer (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
This FOA encourages applications that focus on developing integrated imaging approaches to interrogate the role of inflammation in cancer through strong cross-field collaboration between cancer basic science researchers and imaging scientists. These collaborations are expected to advance science and understanding of cancer inflammation interactions.
Funding: Up to $500K per year for 5 years
Deadline: Standard NIH deadlines starting September 5, 2021
