2020 began with a hopeful footing that quickly evolved. As brick-and-mortar operations quickly transitioned to asynchronous, digital appointments, hybridized patient management, and the like — clinical leaders had to also shift their methods as well as fine novel ways to inspire struggling clinicians in how to adapt to this quickly emerging landscape.

Virtual Social Justice Summit
The next virtual Social Justice Summit will be held on Thursday, Feb. 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. via Zoom. These summits are a continuing series of events to address racism and racial injustice.
Health Sciences photography studio closed until further notice
WVU Photography Services will not be scheduling portrait shoots at the Health Sciences studio for the foreseeable future due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the limited space availability at the studio.
Congratulations to Dannell Boatman of Cancer Prevention & Control on Earning Advanced Degree

Dr. Boatman performs implementation, evaluation, and research activities for Cancer Prevention & Control (CPC) within the WVU Cancer Institute. Her primary implementation and evaluation activities are part of the WV Program to Increase Colorectal Cancer Screening, a CDC-funded CPC project with a focus on working with primary care across the state. Dr. Boatman’s research interests include the social and ecological factors influencing cancer screening decisions, shared decision making for early detection and cancer prevention, and implementation science in cancer control. She completed her Doctor of Education degree in Health Education in December 2020.
J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital Recognized by American College of Surgeons
The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP®) has recognized WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital as one of 89 ACS NSQIP participating hospitals that have achieved meritorious outcomes for surgical patient care in 2019.
As a participant in ACS NSQIP, Ruby Memorial Hospital is required to track the outcomes of inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures and collect data that assesses patient safety and can be used to direct improvement in the quality of surgical care.
“This recognition is proof of our ongoing dedication to the highest level of patient care,” David Borgstrom, MD, WVU Medicine chief of general surgery, said. “It is a direct reflection of the skill and knowledge of our surgeons and surgical staff.”
