A collaborative research initiative involving West Virginia University, the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, and the WVU Cancer Institute to better treat breast cancer patients with brain metastases is receiving support through a National Cancer Institute grant.

William Walker, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Neuroscience at the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, is leading the research that involves utilizing daily rhythms in blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability to better treat/optimize treatment for breast cancer brain metastases (BCBM). BCBM occurs when breast cancer spreads to the brain. Historically, the occurrence of BCBM in patients ranged from 10-15 percent; more recently, the frequency has increased to 25-34 percent.
Amy Allen, assistant director, of WVU Cancer Institute's Cancer Prevention and Control was recently named to the inaugural cohort of WVU Engaged Scholars Institute sponsored by the WVU Office of the Provost. The ESI aims to create a cohort of community-engaged scholars who provide guidance, support, and resource development and increase best practice participation in their respective colleges to advance scholarship, promotion, tenure support, and overall community-engaged practices at WVU. Every year WVU holds a Week of Engagement that takes place during National Volunteer Week. It is a time for students, faculty, staff, and alumni to come together and make a difference in our community while celebrating the impact our community has made in the past year.
