Dental Hygiene Student Supports Pink and Pearl Campaign
WVU School of Dentistry joined the inaugural WV Pink and Pearl Campaign. Students and faculty added an oral cancer awareness element to the breast and lung cancer screening event. The Department of Dental Hygiene faculty, including Ms. Elizabeth Puette, produces a large number of volunteer future hygienists for oral cancer awareness events and they often incorporate discussions about risk factors, screening, detecting and more at a patient’s first visit. Madison Shaw, a junior dental hygiene student participated recently. "Being a part of the Pink and Pearl campaign was a great opportunity to get involved with my community and raise awareness of not only oral cancer, but also breast and lung cancer. I had the privilege to volunteer alongside other health professionals, which was an awesome learning experience," Shaw said. (Add links to the Pink and Pearl campaign).
New Award Focuses on Health Messaging on Social Media

Dannell Boatman, EdD, MS, a researcher with Cancer Prevention & Control (CPC) at the WVU Cancer Institute, was awarded a grant from the Merck Investigator Studies Program (MISP) to continue her research on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination messaging on social media. This project will build on her previously published study that explored HPV-related content on TikTok, a social media platform featuring short video clips developed by users. With the new MISP funding, her research team will explore user-generated content and comments across various social media platforms. “Social media has changed how many find and use health information. Understanding the current conversation will allow us to tailor and pinpoint our messaging to encourage positive health behaviors, like vaccination.” Dr. Boatman leads CPC’s Communicating for Health in Appalachia by Translating Science (CHATS) Lab which has the mission of using communication to improve health outcomes in Appalachia and beyond.
