WVU Cancer Institute’s Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center Earns National Accreditation

The Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) has granted three-year accreditation to the WVU Cancer Institute’s Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center in Morgantown.

To earn voluntary CoC accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care.

Because it is a CoC-accredited cancer center, the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, which operates under the legal name West Virginia University Hospitals, takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer as a complex group of diseases that require consultation among surgeonsmedical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists. This multidisciplinary partnership results in improved patient care.

“The Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center is proud of the work we do and the care we provide to patients who choose to seek treatment here,” Hannah Hazard-Jenkins, M.D., F.A.C.S., director of the WVU Cancer Institute, said. “The CoC recertification confirms for ourselves and our patients that we are committed to providing the highest standard of care for patients diagnosed with cancer.”

WVCTSI Announces 3 Pilot Funding Opportunities

The West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI) has released a request for applications (RFA) for the Open Competition, Launch Pilot Grant, and Jumpstart Grant funding opportunities. The Open Competition RFA allows applicants to request up to $50,000 for projects conducting innovative research that addresses the healthcare needs in West Virginia and Appalachia. Examples include but are not limited to, addiction, Alzheimer’s disease, emerging epidemics (e.g., SARS-CoV-2, HIV, hepatitis C), cancer, cardiovascular disease (including stroke), and chronic lung disease.

The Launch Pilot Grant opportunity offers up to $50,000 in funding which must be utilized over nine months. This funding opportunity is designed to accelerate the translation of intellectual property developed by WVCTSI researchers into realized inventions and patents.

The WVCTSI Jumpstart Grant funding opportunity allows investigators to receive up to $10,000 in funding that must be utilized over six months. This funding opportunity is designed to support small well-defined projects that will lead to measured outcomes such as preliminary data for a larger grant submission.

To assist investigators interested in applying for pilot grant funding, WVCTSI will host a special information session from 3 to 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7. This session will provide more information on individual RFAs and the WVCTSI application process. Anyone interested in this virtual event can register here.
