The Live Like Brent Tailgate returns Sept. 23 to benefit patients at the WVU Cancer Institute! You’re invited to join CI colleagues and supporters for the WVU versus Texas Tech football game. CI employees can get a premium lower-level game ticket and access to the pre-game tailgate for $130, or choose the tailgate-only option for $60. The tailgate festivities include food, drinks, and games — all right next to Milan Puskar Stadium.

WVU Cancer Institute Faculty Speaks on the Impact of HeLa Cells

WVU Cancer Institute's Dr. Ivan Martinez updates his article for The Conversation US discussing HeLa cells after the Lacks' family reaches a settlement with biotech company Thermo Fisher, 70 years after Henrietta Lacks' cells were taken without her consent or knowledge. As a result of that article he was asked to comment on an article for Nature How the 'groundbreaking' Henrietta Lacks settlement could change research.

Mountains of Hope Announces Mini-Grant Opportunity

Mountains of Hope announces a mini-grant opportunity to increase support networks that offer group psychosocial support to help cancer survivors express and manage disease-related emotions, increase social support, enhance relationships with family and providers, and improve symptom control.  The purpose of this funding opportunity is to develop community-based resources that address the psychosocial needs of individuals with cancer and their families and caregivers.

WVU Breaks Record for Externally Supported Expenditures, Underscoring Research Commitment
West Virginia University, the state’s flagship, land-grant R1 institution, reported a record $231 million in externally supported expenditures, which are mainly designated for research, for fiscal year 2023. In this Inside WVUToday video, WVU Vice President for Research Fred King talks about how this feat reinforces the University’s standing as a top research institution in the country.

The American Cancer Society recently announced new updates to a number of grant mechanisms to support beginning investigators, clinician scientists, postdoctoral fellows, as well as independent investigators at any career stage. Changes include increased funding levels and expanded eligibility for most grants. The next submission deadline is October 16.
