Pink Out Photo Shoot

When:
10/20/2023 12:00 PM
Event Location: Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, Morgantown (meet outside at sidewalk near front entrance)
WVU Hospitals employees are invited to wear pink and pearls on Friday, Oct. 20 – National Mammography Day – and participate in a photo shoot to promote both Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is recognized in October, and Lung Cancer Awareness Month, which is observed in November.
The photoshoot will take place at noon, outside, in front of the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, located on WVU Medicine's Morgantown campus. Employees are asked to arrive a few minutes early.

We would also like to re-introduce the Pink and Pearl campaign. Pink and Pearl is an effort of the WVU Cancer Institute and Mountains of Hope, the state's cancer coalition, that focuses on bringing awareness to the prevalence of and screening options for breast and lung cancer. The campaign lasts through October and November. The color pink is associated with breast cancer awareness, while white (or pearl) is a symbol of lung cancer awareness. Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer and the second-leading cause of cancer death in West Virginia women. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in West Virginia and beyond. Our goal is to bring awareness to both breast and lung cancer and to encourage everyone to get their recommended cancer screenings.

Note: While employees are encouraged to wear pink, they should follow Dress and Appearance Policy V.250S.

WVU hosts Appalachian Translational Research Network’s Annual Summit
West Virginia University hosted the 13th Annual Summit of the Appalachian Translational Research Network (ATRN) on October 5-6, 2023. The WVU Cancer Institute (WVUCI) was the primary sponsor of the event.
The ATRN is committed to addressing the significant health challenges and disparities specific to Appalachia by enhancing research collaborations to speed the translation of scientific discoveries to health improvements for this region. Breakout session themes ranged from Clinical Research: Recruitment, Retainment, Challenges, and Best Practices to COVID-19 Challenges in Rural Appalachia to Environmental Impacts on Healthy Habits.
The keynote address, “Working at the Intersection of Local Policy, Research, and Health in Southern Appalachia”, was delivered by Jodi Polaha, PhD, professor in the College of Medicine and director of the Institute for Integrated Behavioral Health at East Tennessee State University.
The Cancer Institute was well-represented at the Summit:
  • Research assistant professor Nicole Stout, DPT, FAPTA co-presented a lunchtime plenary panel, “Implementation Science: Perspectives on Methods to Improve Implementation of Evidence into Practice” along with Robert Stansbury, MD, professor in the WVU School of Medicine’s department of pulmonary and critical care medicine and program director of the Sleep Medicine Fellowship.

  • Research associate Dannell Boatman, EdD, MS presented a talk entitled “Communicating with Strategy: Using Behavioral Insights to Tailor Effective Colorectal and Lung Cancer Screening Messages for Appalachians”.

  • Program coordinator Catherine Whitworth presented a talk entitled “Implementation of Multifaceted Evidence-Based Interventions Increases FIT Colorectal Cancer Test Return Rate at a WV Safety Net Clinic Serving Underrepresented Groups: A Case Study”.

  • Research associate professor in the School of Medicine and associate director of the WVUCI Stephenie Kennedy-Rea, EdD presented a poster entitled “I Vaccinate, a Multi-Level, Four-State Initiative to Improve Uptake of HPV Vaccination in Appalachia: Description and Lessons Learned”.

  • Program manager Abby Starkey, MS presented a poster entitled “Growing Hope: How West Virginia's State Cancer Coalition is Increasing Food Access for People Diagnosed with Cancer”. Starkey’s poster won the “People’s Choice” award.

“The WVUCI was honored to be a sponsor for the ATRN meeting,” said Dr. Kennedy-Rea. “This organization is committed to addressing the health challenges of those living in Appalachia. The annual meeting gives researchers and program staff from multiple institutions the opportunity to learn from one another and establish new collaborations.”

Busy Weekend for WVU Cancer Institute

The WVU Cancer Institute had a busy weekend – one that included a gala, community walk, and soccer game.

The festivities kicked off on Friday (Oct. 6) at the Courage for a Cure Gala, a fundraiser for the National Pancreatic Foundation (NPF), which was held at PNC Park. Several WVU Cancer Institute team members attended.

On Sunday (Oct. 8), the WVU Cancer Institute held its annual Breast Cancer Survivors’ Walk at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park in Morgantown. Survivors, family members, and furry friends joined in on the fun.

Also on Sunday, the WVU Women’s Soccer team held its annual Pink Game in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The team donated $11,893 to the WVU Cancer Institute during the game and brought home a win against Oklahoma!
