Regional Cancer Center Plans Move Forward

Officials from WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital, the WVU Health System, the Ohio County Commission, and the city of Wheeling on Tuesday (Oct. 24) completed a lease and financing transaction that included $2 million in funding from the city of Wheeling and $2 million from the county to jumpstart the demolition of the old campus.

In short, WVU Medicine now has the proverbial “keys” to the nearly 800,000 square feet of space. Demolition is expected to last about 14 months, and then construction on the new facility – an investment of $75-$90 million – will begin.

Projects of this scale always require a vision, but that vision simply would not be possible without the help of folks who share it and believe in the WVU Medicine brand. I’m very grateful that community leaders in Wheeling also share our goal of providing high-quality care from this site and see how this new facility will also have a significant economic impact in Ohio County and surrounding region.

Once the regional cancer center is completed and operational, it is expected to generate 40,000 to 50,000 patient visits per year, serving the region’s cancer treatment needs for many generations to come.

WVU Cancer Institute Host 31st Annual Fall Cancer Conference

On Friday, October 27, the West Virginia University Health Sciences Office of Continuing Education hosted the 31st annual Fall Cancer Conference. Titled “Innovations in Cancer Care”, it drew 197 registrants who benefitted from a range of panels and talks covering topics such as minimizing the impact of drug shortages on oncology patient access to therapy, management of immune toxicities, a new therapy for liver cancer, and the unique needs of cancer patients who are adolescents and young adults. The program featured a keynote presentation by Dan Nikcevich, MD, PhD, a hematologist/oncologist at Essentia Health, who spoke about establishing clinical trial networks in rural regions, drawing many parallels between his work in rural Minnesota and the challenges faced by clinical trialists in Appalachia.

Participants of the conference participated in the Pink and Pearl campaign by sharing their reason for supporting and encouraging others of the benefits of getting screened for breast and lung cancer.
