WVU Researchers Aim To Increase Access to Supportive Care for Brain Tumor Patients

West Virginia University researchers are working to improve the well-being of patients diagnosed with a brain tumor through rehabilitation. The team, led by Nicole Stout, DPT, FAPTA, a researcher with the WVU Cancer Institute and research assistant professor in the School of Public Health, recently conducted a pilot study in which an occupational therapist was added to the staff in a brain tumor clinic was able to make referrals and initiate interventions on the spot. The approach is being used in only a few cancer centers throughout the country.

The team's findings have been published in Neuro-Oncology Advances.

Gwen Dzwil, a graduating senior in the School of Public Health, completed her capstone project with WVUCI's Cancer Prevention and Control. Gwen worked with the Mobile Cancer Screening Units, updated the WV State Cancer Coalition resource guide, and supported data collection for a patient navigation research project.
